The Lucrative World of Enterprise in Virtual Communities
There is a new virtual market that has emerged in the 21st century that allows gamers to profit from their passion of MMORPGs. Monetizing and profiting from massively multiplayer online roleplaying games has become a profitable industry that has provided great wealth for individuals from all walks of life. Whilst some disregard it as a fad amongst the technorati, others recognize the potential of this very viable business model. Millions of players across the globe provide custom for RMT websites that are becoming some of the most search for site on Google.
Minimum media attention is given to this explosive industry and when it has it's been focused on the most extreme or mainstream examples. Nevertheless this phenomenon exists in most MMORPG titles including World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI, EverQuest and EVE, to name a few. An example is in EVE Online where participants progress through numerous dungeons, quests and scenarios in order to acquire piles of the game's currency. Many gamers decide to spend their hard-earned currency on themselves, but others decide to make real-world profit from their virtual acquisitions ; and there are plenty of them.
MMORPG creators rarely agree with or tolerate the practice of in-game trading. Major developers and distributers often cite intellectual property violations as their reason for objection, claiming that participants are selling part of the game which actually belongs to the game's creator. Hyper-inflation of the game's economy is another issue put forward, but the evidence of this inflation is questionable. This is an extremely grey issue and whilst some legal actions are launched by game developers, the only country to take legislative action on the matter is Japan.
Some publishers have pushed passed the problems and seen nothing but opportunity for legitimized RMT. The bottom line for many is that there is money to be made, and the industry is continuing to grow. The orientation of this dynamic industry continues to change, and will no doubt bring further surprises in future.
